Performance in a Haptic Environment

چکیده
For most computer users the human – computer interface is a visual environment in which the user depends on the sense of sight to interact with a graphical user interface. The most common device for interaction with a graphical user interface is the mouse. The user perceives objects in the environment visually and using hand-eye coordination moves the cursor to the desired object to interact with it. While a visual interface is sufficient for most humancomputer interaction, the addition of other senses in the cognitive process of target selection can assist the user in making the selection decision. Our initial studies examine the use of a mouse in a haptically enhanced environment. A series of pilot studies have been completed to consider the feasibility and refine the experiments. The results of these pilot studies and future directions will be presented.

A Robust Controller with Online Authority Transformation for Dual User Haptic Training System
In this study, a force reflection control structure is developed for the surgery training haptic system. In the surgery training haptic system, the surgical operation is cooperatively performed by a trainer and a trainee. The participation of each surgeon in the operation is established through their own haptic consoles. Although the operation is primarily performed by the trainee, the trainer ...
متن کاملComparison of Human Haptic Size Identification and Discrimination Performance in Real and Simulated Environments
The performance levels of human subjects in size identification and discrimination experiments in both real and virtual environments are presented. The virtual environments are displayed with a three degree-of-freedom haptic interface, developed at Vanderbilt University. Results indicate that performance of the size identification and discrimination tasks in the virtual environment is comparabl...
متن کاملStability and Performance of Haptic Displays: Theory and Experiments
In haptic simulation, a human operator kinesthetically explores a virtual environment. To achieve a virtual sense of touch, the human interacts with an active mechanical device, called a haptic display. This paper presents an approach to guarantee that this physical manmachine interface remains stable, while maximizing performance. The key element in ensuring stability is the virtual coupling n...
متن کاملA Study of Perceptual Performance in Haptic Virtual Environments
The performance levels of human subjects in size identification and size discrimination experiments in both real and virtual environments are presented. The virtual environments are displayed with a PHANToM desktop three degree-of-freedom haptic interface. Results indicate that performance of the size identification and size discrimination tasks in the virtual environment is comparable to that ...
متن کاملInteraction with haptic feedback and co-location in virtual reality
This paper outlines a study into the effects of colocation of haptic and visual sensory modes in VR simulations. The study hypothesis is that co-location of these sensory modes will lead to improved task performance and enhanced sense of presence within a VR environment. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect on user performance of co-located haptic feedback. Results show that co-loc...
متن کاملSupporting Collaboration in Distributed Environments by Haptic Force Feedback
The extent that haptic force feedback affects peoples ability to collaborate in a distributed way or how it affects their perception of the collaborative environment has not been investigated much. In this paper an experiment is presented where collaboration in a distributed desktop virtual environment with haptic force feedback was studied. A video analysis of the frequency of failures to lift...
